Top Gun: Maverick. What we know so far.

Having heard back in 2015 that a sequel is on the cards, the second Top Gun movie has been long awaited, especially considering we’ve been waiting for the story to continue since ‘86. When the original movie was released, fans immediately loved it and the huge popularity of the film launched a few notable careers.

The first film of course starred Tom Cruise as Maverick, a new Navy Fighter Pilot determined to prove himself to his superiors in order to be allowed in the sky. His character, cocky yet talented has to go beyond proving his abilities to finally get his shot. Alongside Tom Cruise we saw Anthony Edwards playing Goose, Maverick’s close friend and Val Kilmer as Iceman, another confident and talented recruit. The movie captured the intense, exhilarating and oftentimes dangerous journey to becoming a fighter pilot in the Navy.

Luckily for mega fans, Top Gun: Maverick began filming in the summer of 2018 and will likely attempt to recreate the exhilaration and camaraderie of the first film as we see new recruits train for the role in modern day. Of course, as with any new movie, there’s a lot of questions surrounding it but this is what we know so far.

It’s being released on July 2nd 2021.

There have been a lot of delays with the movie so far, we can thank Covid for that one! The original release date was set to be all the way back in July 2019. It was reported that this was pushed back a year due to extra time being added on to ensure the choreography and aerial stunts and sequences were perfected prior to release. From this point we expected to see the movie on the 23rd December 2020, we can only imagine how well choreographed those scenes are now! Then, due to the pandemic we saw the movie pushed back again, hopefully for the last time to July 2nd 2021, a whole 3 years from the start of filming!

Some fan favourites will return for the sequel.

Fans will be overjoyed to find out that some of the most popular characters will be returning to screen for this sequel! Back in May 2018, Cruise posted an image of himself in full Top Gun garb to Twitter, that’s all the confirmation we need. Then, in June of 2018, Val Kilmer was confirmed to return to his role as Iceman. Remember 2018? That was a good year wasn’t it? *eye roll*.

Alongside the OG’s there are a plethora of fresh faces joining the cast.

As if the excitement of Cruise and Kilman back in uniform, the slue of new cast members is groundbreaking. We will see Miles Teller playing Goose’s son as well as Jennifer Connelly as the female lead, confirmed as of late July ‘18. On top of that, break out star Glen Powell was added to the cast a month after filming began in August ‘18. It is said that Director Jerry Bruckheimer and Paramount were so blown away by Powell’s audition that they enhanced the role especially for him. August 2018 also saw Westworld’s Ed Harris and Bad times at the El-Royale stars Jon Hamm and Lewis Pullman added to the line-up!

Goose’s death comes back to haunt Maverick.

The plot of the movie see’s Maverick, the initial movie’s star character now holding rank as Captain. His task is to take on and prepare a group of young new pilots for a dangerous mission that could cost their lives. One such recruit is Teller’s character, Rooster who is not only a pilot, but is Goose’s son. Rooster complicates matters as it appears he still holds Maverick responsible for his fathers death in the first movie.

There are two full length trailers to sink your teeth into.

Trailer 1

Trailer 2

The trailers give us a picture of Maverick’s struggles becoming a teacher to the new recruits as well as his personal struggles. From the trailers we gather that Maverick has fought to avoid any promotion that would see him stuck on the ground.

What are you looking forward to most about the film’s release? Do you know anything we didn’t mention here? Let us know in the comments.
