10 Godzilla facts that will blow your mind!

It’s all well and fine just watching the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong movie but it’s way more fun to have some insider secrets up your sleeve. If not to subtly brag in your internal monologue about knowing all the hidden details, then at least to impress your friends.

So let’s get into this.

1. Godzilla has his own star on the Hollywood walk of fame.

Unlike Robert DeNiro, Brad Pitt and Clint Eastwood, this mythical creature of the MonsterVerse actually has a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. The star was given to the mega beast in 2004 to commemorate Godzilla’s 50th birthday! Surely that scaly boy should be in some sort of Floridian retirement complex by now?

2. Godzilla actually fought the Avengers

Only huge Marvel fans will know this but between 1977 and 1979, Marvel ran a comic book series of 24 issues featuring Godzilla. The series saw him not only face off against the Avengers but also against the infamous Fantastic Four. Busy guy!

3. A $39,000 Godzilla suit was stolen, eventually however, it washed ashore!

It’s true! Back in 1992, one of the costumes for Godzilla was stolen from a garage in Toho. It was later found washed on the shores of Lake Okutama near Tokyo. One poor woman out for a stroll spotted it and it’s said to have terrified her! If only our lockdown exercise were as exciting!

4. During the 1964 Godzilla vs Mothra, Godzilla’s suit accidentally caught alight.

This beast isn’t having much luck with suits it’s fair to say, but with a career that long there’s going to be blips! Godzilla, in an action scene fighting with Mothra can actually be seen amongst flames and then later catching on fire. The scene was never cut from the movie and thanks to the internet we can relive this moment, check it out (around the 1.08 mark)…

5. Godzilla was originally going to be a super sized mutant octopus.

Things change and plans get thrown out but how do you get from a slimy sea creature to a fire breathing dragon, lizard, dinosaur hybrid?! The original plan was based on a giant octopus style creature but Tomoyuki Tanaka decided to go with a more dinosaur-like creature. Good thing he did really!

6. A Batman vs Godzilla movie was discussed, but never produced.

We can only imagine that Robin would have gone into cardiac arrest with fear coming head to head with this mega destroyer. Not sure if you learn CPR at Bat school either? But as the movie never saw the light of day, we can only speculate.

7. The classic Godzilla roar is a DIY masterpiece

Godzilla’s roar has evolved a lot over the years (haven’t we all?) Originally in 1954, the mighty beast’s iconic battle cry was produced by running a pine tar coated leather glove over a double bass string. You know, standard issue roar making materials right there.

8. Godzilla vs King Ghidorah caused controversy in the west.

This 1991 piece of iconic movie making is beloved by Godzilla fans the world over. However, back in ‘91 during its release, it stirred up quite a bit of outrage and was labelled anti-American. All thanks to one particular scene where, set in WWII, a troop of American soldiers are less than gracefully massacred by the cold blooded reptilian beast. Oops.

9. Patrick Stewart actually presented Godzilla with an MTV lifetime achievement award in 1996.

Must have been nice for Stewart not to be the oldest in the room for once, we kid, we kid, we love him too! In his presentation speech, Patrick Stewart said of the mega beast; “We’ve all heard about his temper, about the people he stepped on on his way to the top. In this world of stars and superstars, it would be no exaggeration to say [that] he is the biggest.”

10. In a shocking twist, scientists say that Godzilla could never actually exist.

I know, we’re sad too. Paleontologist Mike P. Taylor said there is no way a creature like this would be able to function. He mentioned that the limb cartilage in a Godzilla sized monster wouldn’t cope under its own weight and would explode, akin to that of watermelons being crushed. Jeepers!

So there you have it, a plethora of Godzilla sized facts to sink your teeth into and reel off at your next dinner party. To you, and your future dinner guests, you’re welcome! Do you have any Godzilla facts we need to know about? Comment below!
